POSTMALANG – East Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia with various stories and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. This tradition which is held at certain times has different purposes.

As in Banyuwangi, East Java, there is a unique tradition known as sea picking. Picking the sea is a ritual or traditional ceremony carried out as gratitude to God.

In general, the ritual or tradition of picking the sea is held throughout the island of Java. The surrounding community believes that if we perform the ritual we will get the blessing of sustenance and safety.

At first, this ritual was related to the presence of Madurese people who were known as sailors. Therefore, this ritual begins with the making of offerings by elder fishermen who are descendants of Madurese.

The main offering in the sea picking ritual is the head of a kendit goat or goat which has a black head and white body. The color of the goat symbolizes the good or bad nature of humans.

In addition to goats in this ritual, several other offerings are used such as live roosters, plantains, incense-filled with lime, sirik, tobacco, as well as some market snacks.

This sea picking tradition aims to be grateful for the results of the fishermen for one year. Usually, this tradition is carried out every 15 Muharram/Suro in the Javanese calendar. This tradition is quite unique because the fishermen will line up their boats.
