POSTMALANG – East Java is a province that holds many traditions. These diverse traditions serve different purposes. Like puter Kayun which is held in the month of Shawwal.

Puter Kayun is a ritual performed by Boyolangu residents as a ritual to keep promises to their ancestors. In this ritual, they will do a tread by using a wagon. Usually, about 20 wagons are used in the puter Kayun ritual.

Puter Kayun tradition begins with decorating the wagon until it is attractive with beautiful knick-knacks and colors. Various decorative gigs appear lined up. These dokars belong to the Boyolangu residents who still hold the Puter Kayun custom.

This unique tradition continues to be held as a trace of Ki Buyut Jakso, the ancestor of the Boyolangu residents who are believed to be the first person to build a road in the northern area of ​​Banyuwangi.

It is said that, when opening the road to the north, the Dutch asked Ki Buyut Jakso for help because in the north there were mountain mounds that could not be dismantled.

This tradition is usually carried out after Eid al-Fitr. Precisely on the tenth day after Eid. The previous days, Boyolangu residents were busy preparing food and decorations for tour gigs. Three days before the Puter Kayun ritual, the Boyolangu community held a kupat sewu ritual.

Before the implementation of puter Kayun, this tradition begins with a number of rituals. Starting from nyekar to the tomb of Buyut Jakso and the tradition of kupat sewu (a thousand diamonds) which is held three days before puter Kayun and barong performances on Puter Kayun night.

Furthermore, Boyolangu residents held a people's party the day after. There are several artistic entertainments that are held at the people's party, such as barong, kuntulan, gandrung, patrol, and so on. (PUT)
